Here's a scenario that plays out thousands of times every summer across the country.

A family signs their son up for a travel team. The coach says development. The family hears development. Everybody shakes hands. And three months later, the family is furious, the coach is confused, and the kid is stuck in the middle wondering why every car ride home feels like a debrief.

What went wrong?

Nobody lied. Nobody was selfish. Nobody did anything wrong. They just never actually defined what success looked like - and they all quietly assumed everyone else was on the same page.

They weren’t.

The Real Problem Nobody Wants to Name

The biggest source of frustration in youth sports isn’t bad coaching, bad parenting, or bad kids. It’s misaligned expectations that nobody addressed before the season started.

Parents want development. Coaches want to win. Athletes want to have fun. Travel organizations want to fill rosters and collect checks. All four of those things can coexist - but only if someone has an honest conversation up front about which one is the priority right now.

Most of the time, nobody has that conversation. So everybody goes in assuming the other parties share their definition of success. By midseason, the powder keg is lit.

The fix isn’t complicated. Before any season, any team, any commitment - sit down with your athlete and write it out. What does success look like this season? Not next year, not college, not D-I. This season. Put it on paper, then have five minutes with the coach. You’ll learn more in that conversation than in a hundred car rides home.

The Age-by-Age Breakdown

Different ages need completely different goals - and confusing them is where most families go wrong.

Ages 6-14: Protect fun at all costs.

If your athlete isn’t looking forward to practice, something is wrong. At this age, the goal should be fundamentals, multi-sport participation, and building a genuine love of the game. Nothing else is developmentally appropriate. Not exposure. Not specialization. Not showcases.

A red flag worth remembering: any program that tells families ages 5-12 not to play multiple sports is not a development program. It’s a revenue model. Walk away.

The window between five and fourteen passes faster than any parent believes it will. Santa Claus, Halloween, the backyard, the inside jokes at the dinner table — all of it is happening at the same time as the baseball games. The families who let coaches convince them to sacrifice that window for a travel trophy almost always look back with regret. The families who protected it never do.

Ages 14-18: Compete and develop - but check in constantly.

This is where it gets harder. High school athletes are suddenly competing against older, bigger, more experienced players. They’re navigating grades, relationships, identity, peer pressure, and the physical demands of a sport they may or may not want to pursue long-term.

At this stage, the pre-season conversation with coaches matters most. Ask where your athlete fits. Ask what positions he’ll work. Ask what a typical year of development looks like in this program. Get it up front - not at midseason when emotions are high and playing time decisions have already been made.

And during the season? Let it play out. Your job as a parent isn’t to manage lineups. It’s to be the one steady voice in your athlete’s world that isn’t attached to results.

The Specialization Trap

One of the most damaging pieces of advice circulating in youth sports right now goes something like this: “If your son doesn’t commit to this sport year-round, he won’t play for us.”

That threat, aimed at families of eight, nine, and ten-year-olds, is being used to manufacture commitment that benefits the program - not the athlete.

Here’s the data nobody tells you up front: 90% of youth athletes play their last competitive game in high school. Ninety percent. The families who gave up every other sport, every other memory, every other relationship at age ten to chase a path that statistically ends at 17 - those families can’t get that time back.

Multi-sport athletes develop better athletically. They experience more social environments. They develop resilience that one-sport athletes often lack. And when coaches at the college level say they want versatile athletes who can play multiple positions - which they do, consistently - they’re describing athletes who spent ages 10 through 14 not specializing.

The Weekly Check-In Is More Powerful Than You Think

Here’s a simple habit worth building into every season, at every age: a five-minute weekly check-in. Not about statistics. Not about recruiting. Just: how’s it going? What went well? What was frustrating? Anything you’d do differently?

Think of it like checking tire pressure. Too little air - the wheel doesn’t perform. Too much - it blows. The goal is just right. Your athlete needs to feel heard without feeling interrogated. The dinner table isn’t always the right setting. Take a walk. Shoot some hoops in the driveway. Throw the ball against the wall. Movement takes the spotlight off the conversation and makes it easier for kids to open up.

Monthly is the minimum. Weekly is ideal. The parents who do this rarely get blindsided at the end of the season. The ones who don’t are the ones standing in a parking lot in June with tears in their eyes, saying I didn’t see it coming.

Nobody Prepares You for the Last Game

This is the part of the conversation that almost never gets had - until it’s too late.

At a ballfield recently, a mom and dad approached with tears in their eyes after their son’s high school season ended. The team didn’t make the state tournament. But that wasn’t why they were crying.

Their son had decided he wasn’t going to play in college. And they’d just watched his last game - and didn’t know it was the last one until it was over.

Nobody prepares you for that moment. Nobody tells you that one day, without much warning, the season ends and your athlete hangs up the cleats. No ceremony. No send-off. Just the last out of a game that looked like every other game.

The families that navigate this the best aren’t the ones who squeezed the most out of every evaluation window. They’re the ones who built the most genuine relationship with their kids along the way - through car rides, Friday night traditions, backyard games, dinner table rituals - so that when the baseball is done, everything important is still intact.

Protect that. It’s the only thing that lasts.A Note on Recruiting Timelines

For parents just entering this process - 2027s and 2028s especially - here’s the only recruiting advice that matters right now:

Stop worrying about recruiting. Start mapping goals by year.

Freshman year: strength, position development, grades. Sophomore year: build on what worked, fix what didn’t. Junior year: now you open the recruiting conversation.

Keep a journal. Write the goals down. Check them at the end of each season. Recruiting will take care of itself if the foundation is right. The families who skip the foundation and chase the exposure events first are the ones repeating the whole process from the transfer portal at 20.

Right now, somewhere in your city, a rising junior is lying awake worrying about why college coaches haven’t called yet. He’s checking social media, watching other kids get offers, and wondering what he’s doing wrong.

Here’s what he’s actually doing wrong: worrying about the wrong thing.

The five-year rule changes who college coaches are looking at. With rosters now theoretically spanning five classes under a 34-man cap, Division I coaches are increasingly looking past high school athletes toward seasoned JUCO and Division III players who already have a college resume. A D-I JUCO program - Weatherford, San Jacinto, McLennan - is fielding talent that rivals the majority of mid-major D-I programs. When a coach can plug in a battle-tested 21-year-old or take a chance on an 18-year-old who isn’t ready, that’s not a hard decision.

This isn’t bad news. It’s a roadmap. It means the families who spend the next two years building a real foundation will have more options, not fewer.

What raising the floor actually looks like. Coaches don’t recruit exit velocity. They recruit barrel percentage, walk-to-strikeout ratio, strike zone awareness. The parents flooding inboxes with velocity videos are measuring the wrong thing. What moves the floor up is consistent strength work, smart nutrition, quality sleep, and competitive reps against elite competition - not a highlight reel from a tournament in June.

A rising junior who goes from 172 to 190 pounds of functional strength by senior year, who improves his barrel percentage and drops his K rate, who shows up to showcase events physically ready to compete - that athlete finds a fit. The one who spent those same months chasing callbacks and checking Instagram does not.

Stack days, not events. The most useful reframe for any athlete this summer: stop measuring progress by who contacts you. Measure it by what you did today. Did you fuel right? Did you sleep? Did you lift with purpose? Did you take quality reps? Stack enough of those days and the floor rises on its own. The offers follow the floor - not the other way around.

On JUCO: stop apologizing for it. If your athlete is heading to a Division I JUCO program, you have nothing to explain. You’re sending him into one of the most competitive baseball environments in the country, where he’ll be physically and mentally tested in ways that a mid-major D-I program may not even match. The families who understand that come out the other side with their athlete intact. The ones who fought it, chased a D-I logo at 18, and weren’t ready - those are the phone calls that come in at 7:30 in the morning.

What Pepperdine's Head Coach Is Actually Looking for at a Showcase

Swing and miss will get worse, not better. LaTorre was direct: if your athlete has swing-and-miss issues in high school, college pitching will expose them fast. What he’s looking for is strike zone awareness — a hitter who knows the difference between a pitch to attack and a pitch to take. That skill is trainable. Start now.

Self-awareness beats talent. When young athletes aren’t getting playing time, most of them blame the coach. LaTorre’s advice is simple: go talk to the coach. Ask directly. Be willing to hear the truth. Then go prove them wrong. The athletes who do that are the ones who develop. The ones who go home and vent are the ones who transfer.

On Pepperdine right now. Ten freshmen on this year’s roster. Eight more coming in next year. LaTorre is building through high school players first — not the portal. The Opposite Field Tee Drill - Fix Your Swing Before It Breaks

Most young hitters pull everything. And most of them don’t know they’re doing it until a college pitching staff figures it out in about two at-bats.

Here’s a drill that fixes it fast.

Set the tee up on the outer third of the plate — not the middle, not inside. Now hit to the opposite field. Every rep. No exceptions. If the ball goes to center or pulls left, reset and go again.

This drill does three things at once: it keeps your hands inside the ball, it forces you to stay through the zone longer, and it trains your hips to hold back until the ball is deep in the contact zone. The result is a hitter who can hit any pitch in any location — not just the one left in the middle.

The best hitters in the country can go the other way on purpose. Make sure your athlete is one of them.

The Rules Just Changed. Here’s What Smart Families Are Doing About It.

A new executive order. A five-year eligibility clock. A portal full of desperate athletes. And somewhere in the middle of all of it - your kid, just trying to play college baseball.

If you’ve been following the news around college athletics lately, your head is probably spinning. Executive orders. NIL crackdowns. Transfer portal chaos. One-transfer limits. It feels like the rules of the game are changing faster than anyone can keep up.

Here’s the truth: most of it doesn’t apply to your family.

But the parts that do? Those are actually good news, if you know how to read them.

The Executive Order Everyone Is Talking About

Let’s start with what’s real. An executive order targeting NCAA Division I athletics has been generating enormous buzz, and enormous confusion. It touches three main areas: a five-year eligibility limit, a one-transfer rule, and new guardrails on NIL collective money.

Of those three, coaches across the country have a pretty clear view on what’s going to stick.

After reaching out to over 75 college coaches for direct feedback, the response was decisive: the five-year eligibility clock is the piece that matters most, and the piece most coaches actually want.

Think about what college rosters look like right now. The University of Michigan’s basketball team had all five starters as transfers. One of them was 25 years old. Football has roughly 10,000 portal athletes. Division I baseball has about 11,500 players - and 30% of them are currently in the portal.

The five-year rule is a direct response to that reality. Here’s how it works: from the moment your student-athlete sets foot on a college campus, including JUCO, they have five years to use five seasons of eligibility. Redshirt. Transfer. Get hurt. Doesn’t matter. The clock starts, and it runs.

One transfer limit? Most coaches expect that to face serious legal challenges and don’t see it surviving in full. NIL crackdowns? There will be some guardrails put on collective money, but massive restructuring is unlikely to happen overnight.

The five-year clock? That’s going to stick. In fact, most coaches are relieved.

The JUCO Trap Parents Need to Understand Right Now

Here’s where families are getting genuinely dangerous misinformation, and it’s worth spending serious time on.

A very common piece of advice floating around the recruiting world goes something like this: “Send your son to JUCO, let him redshirt his freshman year, play two more, and then transfer to a four-year school with a fresh start.”

That advice is now flatly wrong - and it was always risky.

Under the five-year rule, JUCO years count. Full stop. If your son goes to JUCO, redshirts as a freshman, and plays two years, he has used three years of his five-year window. He arrives at his Division I school with two years left, not three.

The clock doesn’t care that the JUCO called it a “redshirt.” It doesn’t care that the coach had good intentions. The moment your student-athlete enrolled, the clock started.

Ask hard questions before you commit to any JUCO program. Ask specifically: Do you have a developmental team? Will my son be expected to redshirt? How will that affect his five-year clock? If a coach can’t answer those questions clearly, or tells you JUCO years don’t count, walk away.

The Portal Is Not a Gold Rush

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: everyone seems to be looking at the transfer portal like it’s a lottery ticket.

It isn’t.

When athletes enter the portal chasing NIL money or a bigger stage, the numbers tell a sobering story. Most don’t find more money. Many don’t find more playing time. A significant percentage end up at lower levels than where they started, not because they weren’t talented, but because they made a transactional decision during a transitional moment in their lives.

One college coach put it plainly: “If this executive order actually gets enforced, a lot of programs are going to have to look in the mirror and ask, do we have something real to sell? Or have we just been renting talent?”

That question cuts both ways. It’s worth asking about the programs you’re considering, too. Does this school have something real to offer your son beyond a jersey and a scholarship number?

When the financial edge shrinks, (and it will) what’s left is development environment, campus culture, academic quality, and coaching relationships. Those things were always the right reasons to choose a school. The money just made it easier to forget that.

What Smart Families Are Actually Doing

Here’s the thing: none of the portal chaos, NIL drama, or executive order anxiety is new information for the families who were already doing this the right way.

Those families, the ones navigating this with confidence rather than panic, share five things in common.

1. They chose fit over hype. Not the logo. Not the division. Not what someone else’s kid did. They asked: Does this school fit my student-athlete academically, geographically, culturally, and athletically? All four boxes have to get checked. And that includes Division III, a tier that’s criminally underrated. Schools like Salve Regina (currently ranked #2 in the country), Babson, Emory, Chapman, Wisconsin-Whitewater regularly launch athletes into Division I. The lines between D3 and mid-major D1 are blurrier than most families realize.

2. They built a multi-layered plan. A single target isn’t a plan. A plan has reach schools, realistic schools, safety schools, and flexibility built in. Options create leverage. Leverage creates better decisions.

3. They prioritized development over exposure. Coaches aren’t looking for the family with the most showcase appearances. They’re looking for athletes who have grown, physically, mechanically, mentally. Between 15 and 19, an enormous window of development is available. The families who invest in it are the ones whose kids arrive at college ready to compete.

4. They treated academics as a recruiting tool. Coaches ask about grades in the first two minutes of a conversation, because academics signal discipline, time management, and locker room character. Better academic profiles unlock more schools, more money, and more leverage.

5. They asked better questions. Not “how much NIL can my son get?” The better questions: How do you approach player development? What does a typical freshman year look like for a player with my son’s profile? What is your policy on developmental rosters? The families asking those questions are building relationships. The families asking about guaranteed at-bats are building targets on their kids’ backs.

The Real Timeline for ‘27s and ‘28s

No reason to panic. Three things to get in order right now:

Geography: Know your threshold early. It eliminates noise.

Finances: What’s your realistic picture? This shapes which schools are real options versus wishful thinking.

Transcripts: Are your core courses aligned with NCAA Clearinghouse requirements? Fix problems now, not junior year.

Build your video when your athlete has something to show. Progression footage, from 13 to 16 - tells a story highlight reels cannot. And use the 15-to-18 window intentionally. You cannot compress six years of development into 18 months. The families who tried are the ones chasing the portal at 20, wondering what went wrong.

The Bottom Line

The executive order didn’t change the fundamentals of good recruiting. It just made the consequences of bad recruiting harder to escape.

Smart families don’t survive the chaos. They’re the ones who planned around it before it arrived.

The Pause Drill - Train Your Hands to Stay Back

Most young hitters leak power for one reason: the hands fire before the hips open. Everything gets to the hitting zone at the same time, and bat speed dies.

Fix it with one simple drill.

Set up on a tee or with short front toss. Load normally, then pause for one full second at foot strike, hips beginning to rotate, hands completely still. Feel the separation. Then fire.

That pause forces your body to sequence correctly, hips lead, hands follow, barrel arrives last with maximum speed. Do it 20 reps a day for two weeks and your athletes will feel the difference in their first live at-bat.

The goal isn’t a slow swing. It’s a late one.

Why More Parents Are Rethinking the Traditional High School-to-College Timeline

College rosters look older.
Freshmen aren’t playing right away.
And families you respect are quietly choosing paths that didn’t exist, or weren’t talked about, 10 or 15 years ago.

Reclassification.
Post-graduate years.
Gap years.

For some parents, these words still feel extreme. For others, they’re becoming a thoughtful, strategic pause, not to chase athletics, but to prepare their child for college and life.

So what’s really happening?

The Landscape Has Changed (Whether We Like It or Not)

One of the biggest shifts parents struggle to accept is this: college athletics are older now, across all sports.

The “18-year-old freshman walks in and plays right away” model is no longer the norm. College rosters are increasingly filled with:

• Transfers

• JUCO players

• Fifth-year athletes

• Reclassified or post-grad students

That reality alone has changed how families must think about readiness, not just talent.

But here’s the part that often gets missed: this trend isn’t being driven by parents trying to game the system. It’s being driven by colleges, professional sports, and academics all pulling in the same direction.

This Isn’t About Delaying Life, It’s About Preparing for It

One of the loudest criticisms parents hear is:
“Why delay the inevitable? Just move on.”

That sounds logical, until you ask the deeper question:

Is my child truly ready for college independence, academic rigor, and adult expectations right now?

Reclassification and post-grad years aren’t about repeating high school or “getting older to dominate.” In well-run programs, they are transition years, designed to help students:

• Mature academically

• Learn independence away from home

• Manage time, workload, and expectations

• Gain confidence outside their athletic identity

In many cases, families discover their child can handle college, but would thrive more with one intentional year of preparation.

Why This Is Becoming More Common, Across All Sports

This shift isn’t baseball-specific. Hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, and even non-athletes have used prep and post-grad models for decades.

What’s new is that college has become the primary development environment, both academically and athletically. Professional leagues are pushing development downstream, and colleges are responding with older, more mature roster.

That means:

• The gap between high school and college has widened

• Freshmen are expected to handle adult workloads immediately

• Social, academic, and emotional readiness matter more than ever

Families aren’t slowing kids down. They’re helping them bridge the gap.

The Academic Piece Parents Often Overlook

Many parents enter this conversation focused on athletics, but leave realizing the academic benefits are just as important.

A reclass or post-grad year can:

• Strengthen transcripts

• Improve study habits and accountability

• Prepare students for demanding college classrooms

• Build confidence speaking, writing, and advocating for themselves

College professors don’t care about velocity, exit velocity, or recruiting rankings. They care about performance in the classroom. Families who have seen this path firsthand consistently say the same thing:

“Academics ended up being the biggest win.”

Is This Path for Everyone?

No, and that’s important.

Some students are ready right now. Others need structure, challenge, and space to mature. The decision should never be about fear, pressure, or copying someone else’s path.

The right question isn’t:

“Is this normal?”

The right question is:

“What environment helps my child become more prepared, confident, and resilient?”

The Bigger Picture Parents Should Keep in Mind

This entire conversation is less about sports, and more about timing.

There is no prize for being the youngest freshman on campus.
There is value in entering college ready to handle:

• Independence

• Academic rigor

• Competition

• Identity beyond sports

As the recruiting landscape continues to evolve, families who slow down, ask better questions, and focus on long-term development, not short-term optics, are often the ones who feel the most confident in hindsight.

Sometimes, the smartest move forward… is a well-planned pause.

💪 Your Drink Choice is Is Sabotaging Your Young Athlete

Most kids don’t struggle with energy because they need more effort.
They struggle because they’re fueled by juice, soda, and sugary sports drinks instead of water.

Sugar creates quick highs, then hard crashes, leading to poor focus, early fatigue, and sloppy mechanics. At young ages, that crash shows up fast.

Bottom Line

What SEC Coaches Are Really Looking For

Many parents assume college coaches are focused only on metrics, exit velocity, 60 times, rankings, and social media clips. An SEC recruiting coordinator made one thing clear: those numbers matter, but they’re not what separates players.

After talking with Austin Cousino, Recruiting Coordinator at the University of Kentucky, one message stands out: SEC recruiting is about far more than metrics, rankings, or early offers.

At the SEC level, most players have tools. What separates them is how they move, compete, and respond under pressure. Coaches are evaluating athleticism, body control, timing, resilience, and game awareness, things that don’t always show up in numbers or social media clips.

Cousino also emphasized that recruiting and development are not linear. Early standouts change. Late bloomers emerge. Progress over time matters more than timelines or labels.

The biggest takeaway for parents: your son has to want it. SEC baseball demands consistency, competitiveness, and a love for the work. The goal isn’t to rush recruiting, it’s to be ready when opportunity arrives.

The Recruiting Reality Parents Don’t See, Until It’s Too Late

Every parent enters the recruiting process with a picture in their head.

A commitment.
A logo next to their son’s name.
Relief.

But as this week’s Coach Beede Podcast conversation revealed, the commitment is not the finish line, it’s often where the real pressure begins.

Bradley and Mary Mannis didn’t speak in hypotheticals. They shared what it actually felt like to walk through the highs, the public expectations, the whispers in the stands, the de-commitment, and finally the transition into college baseball as parents of a freshman Division I pitcher.

What they described is the part of recruiting most families are never prepared for.

The Hidden Weight of “Being Committed”

When rankings rise, offers stack up, and social media posts go live, something quietly changes.

“Once you put that designation behind your name… there’s a target on your back.”

Parents assume commitment brings peace.
In reality, it often brings pressure, comparison, and identity overload, especially during junior and senior year.

Their son went from nationally ranked to questioned. From celebrated to critiqued. And much of it happened publicly, in stands, online, and in private messages no teenager should have to process alone.

What Parents Got Wrong, And Fixed in Time

One of the most honest admissions from this episode was how involved high school sports had conditioned parents to be.

“High school felt like the toddler stage again. We were hands-on constantly.”

But college baseball doesn’t reward parental involvement, it demands parental restraint.

The shift had to happen before their son ever stepped on campus.

Instead of talking baseball constantly, Mary intentionally changed the environment at home.

“I tried to make it about anything but baseball. That gave him space to talk honestly.”

That decision mattered more than any showcase.

The Shock of College Baseball (And Why It’s Necessary)

The hardest moment didn’t come in a game.
It came in July, before fall practice even started.

A phone call.
Exhaustion.
Vomiting.
And four words no parent wants to hear:

“Mom, I don’t think I can do this.”

Have conversations that don’t involve innings, velocity, or depth charts. Your child needs to know they are more than performance.

Late commitments are not failures. This family didn’t sign until May of senior year, and it worked because they waited for the right fit.

✅3. Prepare for the Freshman Fall, Not the Signing Day
Strength, conditioning, time management, mental discipline. That’s the real preparation.

✅4. Teach Responsibility Early
College programs support academics, but athletes must ask for help. Parents doing schoolwork now create problems later.

✅5. Find a Mentor for You
Parents need outlets too. Someone who’s been through it can keep you from reacting emotionally when things get hard.

The pressure builds, and without realizing it, many parents start sprinting after exposure instead of preparing their kid for the reality of college baseball. This week, Andy Partin cut straight through the noise: families keep chasing attention, but the families who win are the ones who build a player first.

He’s lived it as a coach, program director and now as a dad. And he didn’t hold back:

1. Stop Stressing Over the Timeline and Start Building the Body

🔥 Reality: Colleges are barely recruiting high school underclassmen. Some programs are taking only three high school players per class.

Your kid is not behind. They’re simply not being evaluated yet.

Have your player start a simple, consistent strength routine:

• 3x per week

• 30–40 minutes

• Squats, deadlifts, lunges, pushups, rows, core

Families sit back waiting for emails that never come. Meanwhile, coaches told Andy they want players who are proactive.

Help your player send three quality emails to programs they are genuinely interested in. Include:

• A short intro

• Academic info

• 1–2 quality videos

• Their upcoming schedule

• A reference name (HS or travel coach)

You are not asking for a scholarship. You are opening a door.

6. Build a Highlight Reel That Actually Gets Watched

Most parents don’t know how many opportunities get lost due to terrible video: filmed from too far away, through a fence, shaky angles, or bad lighting.

This is the day when Division I programs must set their 34-man roster at the exact same time the transfer portal opens, creating a perfect storm of roster pressure, uncertainty, and movement across the entire college baseball landscape.

For families navigating recruiting, here’s what December 1st truly means:

1️⃣ A Wave of D1 Cuts & Portal Entries Is Coming

Coaches are forced to make decisions earlier than ever. Many players, especially bubble guys, will hit the portal simply because there is no room. Coach Tyner emphasized that we could see 1,000–1,500 D1 players heading into the portal on Dec 1. Those athletes must immediately scramble to find a new home.

This creates massive downstream effects on:

• Mid-majors

• D2 / D3 programs

• NAIA & JUCO

🚨And yes, it directly affects high school recruits.

2️⃣ Your Son Is Competing With 21–24 Year Old Men

Because of the portal + COVID years + older transfers, college baseball now includes players who are:

• 22–24 years old

• Physically mature

• Game-experienced

• Competing for limited roster spots

If your son is a high school athlete, December 1st is a reminder:
Recruiting is no longer high school vs. high school, it’s boys vs. men.
Physical strength, maturity, and readiness matter more than ever.

3️⃣ This Deadline Directly Impacts Offers & Opportunities

Many parents wonder why coaches “go quiet” in late November. It’s simple:

They can’t promise a spot until they know who’s leaving.

A coach cannot:

• Cut a player

• Hope to land a portal guy

• THEN promise your son a spot

The December 1 roster rule ties their hands. Families misinterpret silence as “lack of interest,” when in reality coaches simply can’t commit yet.

4️⃣ The Trickledown Creates New Opportunity, If You’re Prepared

The flood of older players into the portal does push some high school players down the ladder.

BUT…

It also opens doors after December 1st, when programs suddenly realize they:

• Need pitching depth

• Need a middle infielder

• Need a left-handed bat

Thousands of parents are wondering why no one’s calling, why the offers aren’t coming, and why the dream suddenly feels out of reach. The truth? College baseball has changed, and most families are still playing by the old rules.

The days of 12–15-player recruiting classes straight out of high school are over. Coaches aren’t taking chances on potential. They’re taking proven players, JUCO grads, transfer portal athletes, and postgrads who have the body, the mindset, and the maturity to compete today, not “someday.”

“Parents are still driving a hundred miles an hour straight ahead, but college baseball just took a full-speed left turn. You either adjust or you crash into a brick wall.” - Coach Beede

Walter doesn’t say this to discourage families, he says it because too many are being blindsided. The game isn’t fair, but it’s predictable if you understand what coaches are really looking for: physicality, experience, and commitment to development.

When we talk with coaches across the country, the message is consistent:

• “If your guy isn’t comparable to a JUCO grad, we can’t take him.”

• “I need hitters with 50–100 college-level at-bats.”

• “I need pitchers who can give me 20–30 quality innings right now.”

This isn’t a Division I issue, it’s every level. NAIA, D2, D3, and JUCO are all part of the same reality. Coaches have jobs on the line, and they’re building rosters with players who can contribute immediately.

🔍 What Parents and Players Can Do Right Now

Here’s the blueprint Walter suggests, a checklist that separates wishful thinking from actionable progress:

🧠 1. Get Real About Where You Are

• Take an honest look in the mirror: height, weight, velocity, speed, skill set.

• Stop comparing yourself to social media clips, compare yourself to college rosters.

• Ask: “Would my skill set translate today to a college lineup?”

🎓 2. Build the Foundation

• Grades matter. A 3.0+ weighted GPA opens doors, but accountability matters more than numbers.

• Show you can handle structure, time management, and routine, because that’s what freshmen struggle with most.

Here are 5 things you can do right now to support your athlete’s mental well-being:

1. Clarify the Why

Before every season, or even every weekend, ask your child: Why do you love this sport? Keep that front and center. If the answer ever shifts to "because I have to," it's time to reset.

2. De-emphasize Outcome

Stats and wins are the most visible part of the sport, but they shouldn’t define your child. Focus on effort, growth, and moments. Did they hustle? Did they bounce back after failure? Celebrate those.

3. Watch for Body Language

If your child is unusually tense, quiet, or overreactive, they may be internalizing performance anxiety. Tamara points to body language as the first and clearest sign that something’s off.

4. Teach Breathing + Reset Routines

Whether it's a big pitch, a pressure at-bat, or a long day at a showcase—teach your child to breathe. One deep breath. One clear thought. One pitch at a time.

. . . you’ve probably had this date circled on the calendar for months. August 1 marks the NCAA Division I contact period, when college coaches can officially reach out to student-athletes. For many families, it’s a time of high anticipation, but also confusion, stress, and uncertainty.

So now that it’s here (and already two days in), what should you be thinking about? What should your family be doing?

Let’s talk through it.

🎯 First, What August 1 Really Means

This isn’t a deadline. It’s a starting line.

Coaches aren’t racing to lock in entire recruiting classes overnight. In fact, the word they’re using more and more is “thorough.” This contact period is about beginning conversations, getting to know athletes and families, and laying the groundwork for what might be a year-plus-long evaluation process.

If your phone hasn’t rung yet, don’t panic. Many coaches don’t reach out until days or weeks after August 1, especially if they’re just now evaluating rising juniors, or still sorting their current rosters with JUCO and portal additions.

📱 If You’ve Heard From a Coach

Whether it’s a text, call, or email, respond thoughtfully. Even if the school wasn’t originally on your radar.

Here’s how to handle it:

• Acknowledge the coach's interest. A simple “Thank you for reaching out” goes a long way.

• Ask smart questions: What roster needs do you have for my position? What is the academic profile of your program? What’s the next step in the process?

They're building grown-man rosters that are strong, fast, skilled—and mentally ready. Translation: if your son isn’t developing strength and skill now, the only thing he’ll be hitting in college is the cafeteria.

Let’s be blunt: travel baseball isn’t the golden ticket it once pretended to be. The game’s evolved, and the system is flooded. Showcase invites and eye-popping uniforms don’t replace actual development. Legion ball is back. Strength training? Non-negotiable. And those overpriced “academies” promising D1 glory? They're usually selling a dream wrapped in debt, stripped of a real high school experience, and ending in regret. Walt Beede said it best—ask yourself if 30-year-old “future you” would be glad they skipped prom for an online class at Baseball Academy Prep.

If your athlete doesn’t know why they’re backing up a base or when to take the extra bag, they’re behind.
