The Landscape Has Changed (Whether We Like It or Not)

One of the biggest shifts parents struggle to accept is this: college athletics are older now, across all sports.

The “18-year-old freshman walks in and plays right away” model is no longer the norm. College rosters are increasingly filled with:

• Transfers

• JUCO players

• Fifth-year athletes

• Reclassified or post-grad students

That reality alone has changed how families must think about readiness, not just talent.

But here’s the part that often gets missed: this trend isn’t being driven by parents trying to game the system. It’s being driven by colleges, professional sports, and academics all pulling in the same direction.

This Isn’t About Delaying Life, It’s About Preparing for It

One of the loudest criticisms parents hear is:
“Why delay the inevitable? Just move on.”

That sounds logical, until you ask the deeper question:

Is my child truly ready for college independence, academic rigor, and adult expectations right now?

What’s new is that college has become the primary development environment, both academically and athletically. Professional leagues are pushing development downstream, and colleges are responding with older, more mature roster.

That means:

• The gap between high school and college has widened

• Freshmen are expected to handle adult workloads immediately

• Social, academic, and emotional readiness matter more than ever

Families aren’t slowing kids down. They’re helping them bridge the gap.

The Academic Piece Parents Often Overlook

Many parents enter this conversation focused on athletics, but leave realizing the academic benefits are just as important.

A reclass or post-grad year can:

• Strengthen transcripts

• Improve study habits and accountability

• Prepare students for demanding college classrooms

College professors don’t care about velocity, exit velocity, or recruiting rankings. They care about performance in the classroom. Families who have seen this path firsthand consistently say the same thing:

What SEC Coaches Are Really Looking For

Many parents assume college coaches are focused only on metrics, exit velocity, 60 times, rankings, and social media clips. An SEC recruiting coordinator made one thing clear: those numbers matter, but they’re not what separates players.

After talking with Austin Cousino, Recruiting Coordinator at the University of Kentucky, one message stands out: SEC recruiting is about far more than metrics, rankings, or early offers.

At the SEC level, most players have tools. What separates them is how they move, compete, and respond under pressure. Coaches are evaluating athleticism, body control, timing, resilience, and game awareness, things that don’t always show up in numbers or social media clips.

Cousino also emphasized that recruiting and development are not linear. Early standouts change. Late bloomers emerge. Progress over time matters more than timelines or labels.

The biggest takeaway for parents: your son has to want it. SEC baseball demands consistency, competitiveness, and a love for the work. The goal isn’t to rush recruiting, it’s to be ready when opportunity arrives.

Used by elite hitters to create late speed and consistent contact, this drill trains proper separation between the lower half and the hands, allowing the barrel to work efficiently through the zone, without rushing.

How to do it

Set up in your normal stance.

• Load normally and pause briefly at foot strike

• After the pause, fire the swing smoothly

• Stay connected, don’t let the hands jump early

Use tee or short front toss. Focus on clean contact up the middle and to the opposite gap.

The goal

The Recruiting Reality Parents Don’t See, Until It’s Too Late

Every parent enters the recruiting process with a picture in their head.

A commitment.
A logo next to their son’s name.
Relief.

But as this week’s Coach Beede Podcast conversation revealed, the commitment is not the finish line, it’s often where the real pressure begins.

Bradley and Mary Mannis didn’t speak in hypotheticals. They shared what it actually felt like to walk through the highs, the public expectations, the whispers in the stands, the de-commitment, and finally the transition into college baseball as parents of a freshman Division I pitcher.

What they described is the part of recruiting most families are never prepared for.

The Hidden Weight of “Being Committed”

When rankings rise, offers stack up, and social media posts go live, something quietly changes.

“Once you put that designation behind your name… there’s a target on your back.”

Parents assume commitment brings peace.
In reality, it often brings pressure, comparison, and identity overload, especially during junior and senior year.

Their son went from nationally ranked to questioned. From celebrated to critiqued. And much of it happened publicly, in stands, online, and in private messages no teenager should have to process alone.

What Parents Got Wrong, And Fixed in Time

One of the most honest admissions from this episode was how involved high school sports had conditioned parents to be.

“High school felt like the toddler stage again. We were hands-on constantly.”

But college baseball doesn’t reward parental involvement, it demands parental restraint.

The shift had to happen before their son ever stepped on campus.

Instead of talking baseball constantly, Mary intentionally changed the environment at home.

“I tried to make it about anything but baseball. That gave him space to talk honestly.”

That decision mattered more than any showcase.

The Shock of College Baseball (And Why It’s Necessary)

The hardest moment didn’t come in a game.
It came in July, before fall practice even started.

A phone call.
Exhaustion.
Vomiting.
And four words no parent wants to hear:

“Mom, I don’t think I can do this.”

College programs are not trying to break your son.
They are discovering who he can become.

“They’re pushing them past limits they didn’t even know they had.”

What Parents Should Be Doing Instead (Action Items)

✅1. Create Identity Outside of Baseball
Have conversations that don’t involve innings, velocity, or depth charts. Your child needs to know they are more than performance.

✅2. Stop Rushing the Timeline
Late commitments are not failures. This family didn’t sign until May of senior year, and it worked because they waited for the right fit.

✅3. Prepare for the Freshman Fall, Not the Signing Day
Strength, conditioning, time management, mental discipline. That’s the real preparation.

✅4. Teach Responsibility Early
College programs support academics, but athletes must ask for help. Parents doing schoolwork now create problems later.

✅5. Find a Mentor for You
Parents need outlets too. Someone who’s been through it can keep you from reacting emotionally when things get hard.

The Takeaway Every Parent Needs

This episode wasn’t about Division I logos or recruiting wins.

It was about something bigger.

“I don’t care about his ERA. I care about watching him become a man.”

College baseball is hard on purpose.
Recruiting is messy by design.
And your role as a parent must evolve, or it will become the obstacle.

Your child doesn’t need you to fight battles for them.

They need you to believe they can fight, and grow, on their own.

The recruiting world is louder than ever. Emails, invites, team chats, “must-attend” showcases, social media highlight reels and endless conversations about who is committed. The pressure builds, and without realizing it, many parents start sprinting after exposure instead of preparing their kid for the reality of college baseball. This week, Andy Partin cut straight through the noise: families keep chasing attention, but the families who win are the ones who build a player first.

He’s lived it as a coach, program director and now as a dad. And he didn’t hold back:

“Parents don’t want to hear it… but a lot of kids underperform because of pressure WE put on them.” -Andy Partin

Below are the real topics parents need to focus on, each with a practical step to take this week.

1. Stop Stressing Over the Timeline and Start Building the Body

🔥 Reality: Colleges are barely recruiting high school underclassmen. Some programs are taking only three high school players per class.

Your kid is not behind. They’re simply not being evaluated yet.

🚨Parent Action This Week:
Have your player start a simple, consistent strength routine:

• 3x per week

• 30–40 minutes

• Squats, deadlifts, lunges, pushups, rows, core
  Strength is the #1 separator in modern baseball.

2. Build Real Strength, Not More Lessons

💪 Skill is everywhere now. Strength is rare.

4. Treat Development Like a Team Effort, Not a Coach’s Job

Parents often think development happens through team practice, lessons or tournaments. It doesn’t. The biggest improvements come from everyday habits at home.

Help your player build a weekly development plan that includes:

• 3 strength days

• 2 throwing/arm-care days

• 1–2 hitting sessions

Then print it or put it on the fridge. Routine builds results.

5. Stop Waiting for Schools, Start Contacting Them The Right Way

🎯 In today’s recruiting world, the player must recruit the school.

Families sit back waiting for emails that never come. Meanwhile, coaches told Andy they want players who are proactive.

🚨Parent Action This Week:
Help your player send three quality emails to programs they are genuinely interested in. Include:

• A short intro

• Academic info

• 1–2 quality videos

• Their upcoming schedule

• A reference name (HS or travel coach)

You are not asking for a scholarship. You are opening a door.

6. Build a Highlight Reel That Actually Gets Watched

Most parents don’t know how many opportunities get lost due to terrible video: filmed from too far away, through a fence, shaky angles, or bad lighting.

Record three new clips of your player doing:

• 5–8 swings

• 8–10 throws

• A baserunning burst or position movement

💪 Hydration: The Hidden Performance Edge Every Parent Overlooks

Parents spend money on lessons, bats, travel, and showcases, but one of the most important performance factors isn’t skill-based at all. It’s hydration. And according to Jacksonville State Head Coach Steve Bieser, it’s one of the least understood areas in player development.

During his conversation with Walter Beede, Coach Bieser explained that most athletes simply don’t grasp how hydration impacts performance, especially when games stack up in tournaments or during long practice weeks.

This is the day when Division I programs must set their 34-man roster at the exact same time the transfer portal opens, creating a perfect storm of roster pressure, uncertainty, and movement across the entire college baseball landscape.

For families navigating recruiting, here’s what December 1st truly means:

1️⃣ A Wave of D1 Cuts & Portal Entries Is Coming

Coaches are forced to make decisions earlier than ever. Many players, especially bubble guys, will hit the portal simply because there is no room. Coach Tyner emphasized that we could see 1,000–1,500 D1 players heading into the portal on Dec 1. Those athletes must immediately scramble to find a new home.

This creates massive downstream effects on:

• Mid-majors

• D2 / D3 programs

• NAIA & JUCO

🚨And yes, it directly affects high school recruits.

2️⃣ Your Son Is Competing With 21–24 Year Old Men

Because of the portal + COVID years + older transfers, college baseball now includes players who are:

• 22–24 years old

• Physically mature

• Game-experienced

• Competing for limited roster spots

If your son is a high school athlete, December 1st is a reminder:
Recruiting is no longer high school vs. high school, it’s boys vs. men.
Physical strength, maturity, and readiness matter more than ever.

3️⃣ This Deadline Directly Impacts Offers & Opportunities

Many parents wonder why coaches “go quiet” in late November. It’s simple:

They can’t promise a spot until they know who’s leaving.

A coach cannot:

• Cut a player

• Hope to land a portal guy

• THEN promise your son a spot

The December 1 roster rule ties their hands. Families misinterpret silence as “lack of interest,” when in reality coaches simply can’t commit yet.

4️⃣ The Trickledown Creates New Opportunity, If You’re Prepared

The flood of older players into the portal does push some high school players down the ladder.

BUT…

It also opens doors after December 1st, when programs suddenly realize they:

• Need pitching depth

• Need a middle infielder

• Need a left-handed bat

• Lost a player unexpectedly

Parents must be ready for post–Dec 1 recruiting chaos, where rosters change overnight.

5️⃣ Development > Labels Right Now

If your son is not physically or mentally ready for Division I baseball, there is no shame in starting at:

• JUCO

• NAIA

• D2 or D3

🚨The portal elevates players who produce. It doesn’t protect players who aren’t ready.

Creatine might be the most misunderstood supplement in youth sports - and one of the most researched and proven tools for developing strength, speed, and recovery when used correctly. • Carbs for energy

• Fruits + vegetables

• Adequate calories for growth

3. Hydrating properly

Creatine draws water into the muscle.
If an athlete is already dehydrated, creatine can increase fatigue rather than reduce it.

  • “How do you develop players in your program?”

  • “What’s your plan for freshmen who may not play right away?”

  • “What type of players are you currently building around?”

So how do we take a step back without stepping away?

Here are 5 things you can do right now to support your athlete’s mental well-being:

1. Clarify the Why

Before every season, or even every weekend, ask your child: Why do you love this sport? Keep that front and center. If the answer ever shifts to "because I have to," it's time to reset.

2. De-emphasize Outcome

Stats and wins are the most visible part of the sport, but they shouldn’t define your child. Focus on effort, growth, and moments. Did they hustle? Did they bounce back after failure? Celebrate those.

3. Watch for Body Language

If your child is unusually tense, quiet, or overreactive, they may be internalizing performance anxiety. Tamara points to body language as the first and clearest sign that something’s off.

4. Teach Breathing + Reset Routines

Whether it's a big pitch, a pressure at-bat, or a long day at a showcase—teach your child to breathe. One deep breath. One clear thought. One pitch at a time.

So now that it’s here (and already two days in), what should you be thinking about? What should your family be doing?

Let’s talk through it.

🎯 First, What August 1 Really Means

This isn’t a deadline. It’s a starting line.

Coaches aren’t racing to lock in entire recruiting classes overnight. In fact, the word they’re using more and more is “thorough.” This contact period is about beginning conversations, getting to know athletes and families, and laying the groundwork for what might be a year-plus-long evaluation process.

If your phone hasn’t rung yet, don’t panic. Many coaches don’t reach out until days or weeks after August 1, especially if they’re just now evaluating rising juniors, or still sorting their current rosters with JUCO and portal additions.

Let’s be blunt: travel baseball isn’t the golden ticket it once pretended to be. The game’s evolved, and the system is flooded. Showcase invites and eye-popping uniforms don’t replace actual development. Legion ball is back. Strength training? Non-negotiable. And those overpriced “academies” promising D1 glory? The NCAA Division I settlement, officially approved on June 6, has thrown college sports into uncharted territory—reshaping rosters, recruiting, and athlete compensation overnight. One of the most urgent changes involves the introduction of a new status: DSA, or Designated Student-Athlete. This label is meant to protect athletes who were cut—or are at risk of being cut—due to the new roster caps. But the rules are vague, and the timeline is tight. Each school that opts into the settlement must submit its list of DSAs by July 6, meaning athletes and families need to act fast by contacting coaches and confirming their inclusion.

"There's no penalty for schools over-designating," says sports attorney and former D1 athlete Philip Sheng. "If you're on the bubble, get your name on that list."

While some schools may use the DSA status to protect their own athletes, others could exploit it to stockpile transfers and bolster depth. Add in the looming Title IX compliance issues—particularly for football and baseball programs trying to maintain larger rosters—and things get even more complicated. Meanwhile, the new $20.5 million per school revenue-sharing allowance will mostly benefit football and basketball players, while all NIL deals over $600 must now be reported through the NCAA’s new clearinghouse system. Sheng’s bottom line: be respectfully persistent, document everything, and take action now. For families caught in the middle of this unprecedented shift, staying informed and proactive may be the only way to keep opportunities alive.

The opening weekend of the Men’s College World Series delivered high drama and early surprises. Coastal Carolina continued its unbeaten streak, improving to 25–0, with a commanding 6–2 win over Oregon State behind a dominant 7 2/3-inning performance by Jacob Morrison. Earlier in the weekend, the Chanticleers also took down Arizona 7–4 in their opener. Arizona, meanwhile, struggled throughout the tournament and was eliminated on Sunday by Louisville, 8–3, after surrendering six runs in the eighth inning. Oregon State started strong with a narrow 4–3 win over Louisville on Friday, but their Sunday loss to Coastal dropped them into the elimination bracket. In Saturday’s action, LSU rode a stellar outing from Kade Anderson to defeat SEC rival Arkansas 4–1, while UCLA held off a late surge from Murray State to win 6–4 in the Bruins’ opener. Though Murray State was making its first-ever MCWS appearance, the underdog Racers showed grit, pushing UCLA to the wire.
