College Camps, Recruiting Reality, and a Milestone for the Ages
It’s College Camp Season—Are You Really Ready?
College prospect camps can open doors, but only if you approach them the right way. Many families show up thinking talent alone will get noticed, but coaches are evaluating far more than just performance. From the moment your player checks in, everything matters: attitude, effort, communication, and how they carry themselves on and off the field. To help families navigate this process, here are some lesser-known but essential tips to make the most of every camp experience.
🔍 1. It's Not Just a Tryout, It's a Job Interview
College coaches are watching everything, not just your throws and swings.
👉 Secret: Hustle, body language, how you warm up, and even how you respond to failure matters as much as your tools. Coaches want competitors and teammates.
📝 2. Email the Coaches Before You Go
Most players show up hoping to be noticed.
👉 Secret: Email the coaching staff a week before the camp with your name, grad year, GPA, position, and a short video clip. Now you’re on their radar before the first pitch.
🎯 3. Know If You're Actually Being Recruited
Not all invites mean serious interest.
👉 Secret: Many camps are fundraisers, make sure to ask yourself:
Did they personally reach out to you?
Are they talking to you before/after the camp?
If not, this might be more of a pay-to-play exposure opportunity.
📊 4. Get Your Measurables Right, and Repeat Them
Exit velocity, 60-yard dash, pop time, arm velo, these matter.
👉 Secret: Keep a personal record of your metrics from every camp. Improvement is gold, and it shows coaches you’re serious and self-aware.
🤝 5. Talk to the Current Players
They’re often at camp helping out.
👉 Secret: Ask them what the program is really like, coaching style, weight room culture, academic expectations. They’ll often tell you more than coaches will.
🧠 6. Know the Roster & Where You Fit
You want to go to a camp where you have a shot.
👉 Secret: Look at the team’s current roster and commits. If they just signed 3 catchers in your grad year… it’s probably not the place for you.
🕰️ 7. Stay Until the End (and Beyond)
Players sometimes dip out early or mentally check out.
👉 Secret: Coaches notice who sticks around to clean up gear or thank staff. That maturity sticks out, especially when skills are even.
📲 8. Social Media Is Part of Your Resume
Coaches will Google you.
👉 Secret: Your X or Instagram should reflect your character and effort, post game clips, training, grades, and appreciation for teammates, not drama or nonsense.
💡 BONUS: What to Bring
Don’t overlook this, you want to stand out for the right reasons.
Wear clean, team-neutral gear unless it’s from the hosting school.
Bring extra water, a backup glove, and your own sharpie for labeling.
Have printed copies of your academic/resume sheet in your bag.

💡Bluebook Coach Spotlight: AJ Gonzalez HC, St. Peter’s University
When AJ Gonzalez officially shed the “interim” title and became Head Baseball Coach at St. Peter’s University, he wasn’t just stepping into a role—he was stepping into a mission. In the heart of Jersey City, New Jersey, nestled within the competitive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Gonzalez is leading a cultural shift rooted in grit, player development, and opportunity.
With a playing career that spanned JUCO, Division II, and Division III programs, and coaching experience under veteran mentors, Gonzalez knows what overlooked athletes look like—and more importantly, how to develop them. “This is a great opportunity to not focus on glitz and glam,” Gonzalez said. “It’s about playing baseball in its purest form.”
Why Consider St. Peter’s?
Location: Inner-city Jersey City brings a different energy to Division I baseball—diverse, gritty, and full of opportunity.
Philosophy: This isn’t a portal-first program. Gonzalez is committed to building a foundation with high school players who can grow, compete, and lead across four years.
Opportunity to Play: With 17 incoming freshmen in the 2025 class, Gonzalez is not afraid to play freshmen who are ready to compete from day one.
Culture: The Peacocks value character and chip-on-the-shoulder work ethic over raw flash. Players fundraise together, train early, and grow as teammates.
Development Matters: Whether it’s catch play, routine reps, or time management, players are pushed to be disciplined and game-ready at every level.
“We’re not chasing the cool factor. We’re chasing kids who love the game, are ready to grow, and want to compete right away. This is where you can come build something.” – Coach AJ Gonzalez
What Coach Gonzalez Looks for in Recruits
Feel for the Game: Show awareness, not just tools. Understand baseball situations, fundamentals, and how to win.
Game Speed Reps: Be fast, precise, and prepared. “College baseball is fast. You need to look ready even in catch play.”
Clean Video & Communication: DM or email with a short intro, GPA, key tools, and in-game footage. No fluff. No highlight reels only.
Time Management: Build routines early. Coach expects his players to juggle school, workouts, and 5 a.m. lifts.
Local Talent Preferred (But Not Limited): St. Peter’s prioritizes the Northeast, but good baseball is good baseball—wherever you’re from.
Off the Field Expectations
The Peacocks' team GPA hit 3.38 last spring—the highest in five years. That’s no accident. Between early morning lifts, fundraising, and full class loads, Gonzalez prepares his players for life beyond the lines as much as inside them.
Why It Matters for Parents
St. Peter’s may not have the high-budget facilities of SEC powerhouses, but what it offers is rare: a real chance to play, develop, and be coached by someone who truly gets the underdog story. For student-athletes with grit, character, and game sense, St. Peter’s isn’t a fallback—it’s a launchpad.
If your son is looking for a place to compete early, grow as a teammate, and be part of a culture shift in college baseball, St. Peter’s University and Coach AJ Gonzalez should absolutely be on your radar.

Hot Streaks & Trade Buzz
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ season woes deepened with a sweep by the Astros, sliding them into 50–53 territory. Rumors now swirl that they’ll be sellers, especially with trade candidates like Eugenio Suárez, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Josh Naylor drawing interest from multiple playoff hopefuls. Meanwhile, Riley Greene emerged as a dark-horse contender for AL MVP. his 140 wRC+ and momentum with the Tigers have buyers circling.
League-Leading Performances
Eugenio Suárez powered through as the NL Player of the Week, slashing 5-for-10 with four home runs and an OPS of 2.283, making him the third player ever to win four POTW honors in one season. And over in the AL East, the Blue Jays continued their dominant stretch, taking 17 wins in 21 games behind strong starts from Kevin Gausman and clutch offense from Alejandro Kirk and Giancarlo Stanton.
Division Drama & Milestones
On July 22, the Brewers snapped their rivals' 11-game win streak, the Cubs, with a 1–0 shocker. Cal Raleigh’s 39th homer and a 10-strikeout outing from Logan Gilbert sealed it, claiming the best record in the NL and tightening one of the tightest Central races ever. But the spotlight shifted on July 27, when Mike Trout launched his 397th homer, hitting his 1,000th career RBI, now among just three Angels ever to reach that milestone. He also edged past Joe Carter into 62nd on the all-time HR list in a 4–1 win over Seattle (where thoughtful Cal Raleigh added his 41st HR, tying the Mariners’ switch-hitting catcher record)
